Howard County Awards $4 Million Grant to HCGH
County Executive Ken Ulman recently announced a $4 million grant award to Howard County General Hospital (HCGH), which was approved by the county council to help with the large-scale capital project currently underway to renovate and expand the Johns Hopkins-owned facility.

Per the agreement, Howard County General Hospital will receive the first installment of $3.5 million now with a follow-up payment of $500,000 in April.

“Since Howard County General Hospital first opened its doors 30 years ago, they have been providing the very best in quality health care to our community,” said Ulman. “As our population has grown, so has the demand for patient care, and that is not likely to change as the first wave of baby boomers turn 60. This new pavilion and parking garage will help the hospital meet those increasing health care needs.”

HCGH hopes to raise a total of $30 million in private donations to complete the project, which is expected to cost $105 million. The pavilion is scheduled for completion in late 2009. The entire project will be complete in 2011.

j-ref loans $220,000 to New Local Med Spa
j-ref, a small business financier in Howard County, recently loaned $220,000 to Luna’s Med Spa, an extension of the services offered by Luna’s Day Spa, in Ellicott City. The loan will be used for laser equipment, leasehold improvements and working capital.

Luna’s will utilize laser equipment to provide its clients with minimally invasive or non-invasive aesthetic medical procedures in order to improve their appearance. Both spas are owned by Sonia Singh, a licensed aesthetician who has worked in the spa industry for 15 years.

Since 2001, Singh has been the owner and manager of Luna’s Day Spa, which is located at 9051 Baltimore National Pike, in Ellicott City. Luna’s Day Spa offers a variety of skincare treatments to its clients. Singh will perform the cosmetic procedures at the Med Spa, while a medical director will perform the medical treatments.

“By 2009, the number of cosmetic surgical and non-surgical procedures is expected to surpass 80 million,” said Michael Mobley, executive director of j-ref. “Sonia has done her due diligence and has the clientele that is requesting these services. j-ref is committed to helping business owners like her expand in the region.”

‘Green’ UM Real Estate Program to Get Greener
The University of Maryland’s innovative real estate development program will expand significantly with a major gift from Baltimore developer John B. Colvin and his wife, Karen.

The $3 million gift to Great Expectations, the Campaign for Maryland, will establish the Colvin Institute of Real Estate Development in Maryland’s School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. The Institute will be the academic home for the school’s two-year-old Master’s in Real Estate Development (MRED), giving the program a solid financial foundation, creating a new track with even greater focus on sustainable development, expanding its leadership training, as well as extending the program’s public outreach and international presence.

“The Colvin Institute opens a new chapter for us,” said Margaret McFarland, who directs Maryland’s MRED program. “It gives us a solid platform for growth and resources to enrich the curriculum. There’s a growing recognition that development needs to get smarter and greener, and our program will now reflect this with more intense focus.”

Increasing support for innovative programs is a key goal of Maryland’s campaign to raise $1 billion by 2011. Maryland’s MRED program is one of just a handful nationwide to focus on the full range of issues facing developers.

Osiris Receives FDA Clearance to Start Phase II Trial
Osiris Therapeutics, of Columbia, has announced that interim results at the one-year point for the company’s Phase I trial evaluating Prochymal for the treatment of heart attack patients continued to demonstrate a strong safety profile and statistically significant improvement in heart function. Based upon the positive results from this 53-patient, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, the company has received approval from the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to initiate a Phase II trial.

“This early stage trial exceeded our expectations for both safety and efficacy,” said Randal Mills, Osiris president and CEO. “These data support our pre-clinical results and suggest that in acute myocardial infarction, early treatment with Prochymal can alter the course of disease. Based on this encouraging data, we look forward to promptly advancing Prochymal in this exciting, multi-billion-dollar market.”

Arbitron and Nielsen Terminate Project Apollo
Arbitron and The Nielsen Co. have announced the termination of the development of “Project Apollo,” the proposed single-source, national research service. It was based on Nielsen’s Homescan technology for measuring consumer purchase behavior, combined with Arbitron’s Portable People Meter system, measuring electronic media exposure.

The two companies had been working on the pilot project since early in 2005. “Despite a promising level of interest, we did not secure sufficient client commitments to make Project Apollo a sustainable venture for our two companies,” Arbitron and Nielsen said in a joint statement.

Maroon, Hillman PR Agencies to Team Up, Announce WSOP Deal
Marriottsville-based Maroon PR and Sandy Hillman Communications have formed a strategic relationship for the purpose of co-representing clients. The two companies’ first collaboration will be the handling of public relations for the World Series of Poker (WSOP), with which Hillman has been associated since it was purchased by Harrah’s Entertainment in 2004.

Based in Las Vegas, the World Series of Poker is the largest, richest and most prestigious event of its kind, with 55 nations participating annually. The $150 million prize pool is larger than those of the Indy 500, Kentucky Derby, The Masters and Wimbledon combined.

Jackson Steps Down as Sourcefire CEO
Columbia-based Sourcefire has announced that Wayne Jackson has decided to step down as the company’s CEO to pursue other opportunities. The company’s board of directors has initiated an external search process for successor.

Jackson will stay in his current role until a successor is named. Separately, the board has decided to separate the roles of CEO and chairman of the board of directors. To that end, it designated Joseph Chinnici, formerly Sourcefire’s lead outside director, to serve as non-executive chairman of the board.

Vendors Wanted for Howard County’s 50+EXPO 2008
Howard County’s 50+EXPO is set to return for its 10th consecutive year and is calling all vendors to participate in the annual event for the 50-and-over population, their families, caregivers and friends. The 2008 event will be held on Friday, Oct. 17, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Wilde Lake High School, at 5460 Trumpeter Road in Columbia.

Last year’s 50+EXPO drew a crowd of more than 6,000 attendees and featured more than 140 commercial and nonprofit vendors of services, products and programs. In addition, the 50+EXPO boasts a health fair, health screenings, alternative care fair, a speaker series, workshops, demonstrations, an auction, live entertainment and food.

The event offers an opportunity for vendors to reach Howard County’s seniors, who are the second-fastest growing population in the state of Maryland. Two-thirds of Howard County’s 60-plus population report annual incomes of more than $30,000 and are well educated: More than 95% of the seniors hold a high school diploma; and in the age range of 60 to 64, 60% hold a college degree.

Fees for vendors vary and are based on exhibitor category and exhibit location. Vendor packets and information on sponsorship opportunities are available on the county’s web site at www.howardcountymd.gov by clicking on the link under “What’s New,” by calling 410-531-5472 or by e-mailing ldiener@howardcountymd.gov.
